Emma Kelly

Lakefly Project Officer

Emma is our Lakefly Project Officer

Emma coordinates and delivers training for our Lakefly citizen science project, which empowers volunteers to monitor lake health by collecting and identifying freshwater invertebrates. These tiny creatures tell us a lot about water quality, especially the absence of pollution sensitive species. She also supports logistics for the Riverfly Partnership, working closely with the team to keep things running smoothly across the UK.

Emma joined the Freshwater Biological Association in 2022 following a career change, and is currently studying part-time for a degree in Environmental Science. Since joining she has contributed to a wide range of FBA projects. Including coordinating the Big Windermere Survey, delivering naturalness training for Priority Habitats and developed training resources for our Biology and Ecology online training course. Emma has also supported work at our Species Recovery Centre on freshwater pearl mussel conservation and has contributed to our LD-CHARM project by exploring our archives for historical information relating to Arctic charr.

Emma enjoys most being out in the field, collecting freshwater invertebrates, and sharing that experience with volunteers. She finds it especially rewarding to see peoples excitement as they discover the amazing diversity of life in our waters.
